Although a backflow prevention device may not show any visible signs of damage, there may be internal damage as the devices can be susceptible to wear and fatigue. As a result, backflow prevention devices need to be tested by an approved contractor licensed with the City of Barrie to perform such testing and inspection.
How often do backflow prevention devices need to be tested?
In order to ensure the proper operation of a backflow prevention device, it must be tested upon installation, repair, relocation or replacement, and annually thereafter.
A valid City of Barrie Water Operations / Backflow Prevention test/inspection tag must be affixed to all testable devices, air-gaps, and auxiliary water supplies. You will be provided with a test/inspection month in which all testable devices, air-gaps and auxiliary water supplies must be completed, or within 14 days of the one-year anniversary of the previous test/inspection. When all testing and inspections are complete, a copy of all test/inspection reports must be forwarded to the City of Barrie Water Operations Branch within fourteen (14) days of the date of the test or inspection.
Who is responsible for the installation and annual testing of the backflow prevention device?
The owner of the property or building that currently has a service connection to the City's water supply or has applied for a new service connection is responsible for the installation and annual testing of the backflow prevention devices by a City-approved and licensed contractor.
Property owners shall ensure that all testable backflow prevention devices are tested upon installation, after being cleaned, repaired, overhauled or relocated and as otherwise required by the City of Barrie.
