The recent push by the City of Barrie for compliance with the Backflow Prevention Program might have some asking: What is Backflow?
Backflow is the term used in the plumbing field in reference to the unwanted reversal of the flow of water, or a combination of water with another source, into the potable water supply. This occurs as a result of cross-connections that exist within the distribution system where non potable water can be connected to potable sources. Backflow can be caused by either the reduced pressure in the distribution system or the increased pressure from a non potable source. In either case, this contamination of the water supply can pose significant health risk.
The risk posed by Backflow can however be mitigated through preventative measures. The installation of a Backflow prevention device serves to protect public health by preventing the contamination of potable water.
